Almost everyone is snapping photos on their iPhones and posting them on social media sites, but most are not really good.
This summer, residents and (nonresidents) will have a chance to learn from a professional how to take and produce exceptional photos.
Rick Steil, who had a long, successful career as a professional photographer, and now teaches beginning and AP photography at Palisades High, is offering a digital photography summer camp from July 13 to 17.
The course, on-line and in-person, will help students learn how to create stunning images, after learning about lighting, photographic techniques and camera functions. Visual awareness and basic Photoshop will also be taught.
Sessions will be limited to a small number of students and those participating will need access to a computer. Digital shooting assignments will be individually reviewed, but students will also learn from each other during the class-wide critiques.
Steil, an Iowa native, earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Dubuque, where he was the star quarterback. He led his team to back-to-back NCAA Division III playoff appearances. Upon graduation in 1981, he attended Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara for photography and shortly found work around the world in New York, Paris, Milan and Tahiti.
The Alphabet streets resident joined the Palisades High faculty in 2008. He and his wife, Nicole Fitzgerald, have two post-college sons, Tyler and Tucker. (Visit: ricksteil.com)
