Dance Clothing Store Opens on Via de la Paz
The opening of various stores in Caruso’s Palisades Village is certainly the most highly-anticipated event in Pacific Palisades this fall.
However, for hundreds of parents whose children and teens dance, the number one store needed in Pacific Palisades is one that sells dancewear—and it is already here.
This past week, Palisades residents Traci Chorna and Terry Ross opened 90272 Dance, a dance apparel and shoes store at 871 Via de la Paz, in the space that formerly housed Ted Mackie’s bicycle repair shop.
The space has been beautifully redone, and Chorna and Ross are as friendly and welcoming as former shopkeeper Mackie, whose daughter is now the building’s landlord. They urge everyone to stop by and say “Hi.”
The two moms met at Crossroads, where their children attended school. They continued their conversations and friendship while spending time at dance studios while their daughters took lessons.
They remember complaining for several years about having to drive to Westwood if a daughter needed tights or a leotard or shoes.
“There was such a need for a [local] dance store,” said Chorna, whose two daughters are now 11 and 14.
Ross, whose three daughters are 12, 16 and 17, agreed.
Even with three dance studios in Pacific Palisades (Fancy Feet, Ballet Conservatory West and Village Arts and Enrichment), and lessons offered at the Palisades and Rustic Canyon Recreation Center plus The Adderley School, there was nary a place to buy dancewear here. Ross’s two older daughters are members of the Palisades High School dance team, and those dancers also had no place to shop locally.
Chorna and Ross, who can both walk to their store from their homes on Via, sell all major brands such as Block, SoDanca, Mirella, Ballet Rosa, Leo, Ainsliewear and Bodies in Motion.
They write on their website, “We have been watching our own girls spend countless hours dancing, wearing through, losing and outgrowing shoes. We know how a shoe fits, and how a leotard looks. We know how to do a bun, and what you need for the next recital, performance or competition.”
What makes this store special, besides being the only place to buy necessary dance apparel in the Palisades, is they have an emergency service. “If you lose a shoe, we will open for you!”
Ross, who has danced since she was little, grew up in South Africa before moving to Toronto when she was 15. She attended York University and then San Diego State, where she continued to dance and received her degree.
Her husband, Gavin, who is also originally from South Africa and moved to Pacific Palisades when he was young, attended Paul Revere and graduated from Palisades High School. He is the owner of L.A. Overhead Garage Door (laoverheadgaragedoor.com). “He’s done 90 percent of the doors in the Palisades,” Ross said. “Everyone knows him.”
Chorna graduated from Crossroads School and moved to Paris to attend Eurocentres school. She entered the workforce and represented fashion photographer Winston West for six years, then moved on to Click Models and L.A. Models, where she was a booker.
She worked as a flight attendant for MGM Grand Air, based out of New York, but when the company folded she moved back to Los Angeles.
She met husband Scott, an international businessman, at Father’s Office on Montana, and they moved to Hong Kong for five years, before settling in Pacific Palisades in 2009.
In addition to dancewear and shoes at the store, there are dance bags, gifts, jewelry and hair accessories, and Sugarfina (candy) will be available next week.
