Ruby has lived in the Palisades for at least a decade, usually sleeping near the library. She has been resistent to help. She is one of the people who will be counted during the homeless count.
Every January, there’s a homeless count in Los Angeles, conducted through the Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority (LAHSA).
The Pacific Palisades Task Force on Homelessness (PPTFH) is gearing up for the count here. Six years ago, the PPTFH was formed to deal with the issue of homelessness in the Palisades and has been highly successful.
A key metric to understanding the homeless situation in the Palisades is determining exactly how many live here. Volunteers are needed to go out locally in the evening on Wednesday, January 22. Volunteers meet at 9 p.m. at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church gym, 880 Toyopa Dr.
Kim Clary, who is on the PPTFH Board of Directors, is helping organize the count and said about 50 volunteers are needed to canvass this area. After registration and on the evening of the count, volunteers receive in-depth training and will be asked to sign a release. It takes about three hours, working with a team, to search for the homeless and count their numbers.
“Everyone who has ever volunteered for this event has found it very rewarding, interesting and an experience they want to take part in every year,” Clary said.
