People who shop at the Palisades-Malibu YMCA Christmas tree lot get special attention from “elves.”
Standing on the corner of Sunset and Temescal Canyon Road on Monday night, I enjoyed the smell of fir trees wafting in the air. The Palisades-Malibu YMCA Christmas Tree lot was open for business in Simon Meadow, and that afternoon there had been a new delivery of trees.
This may be one of the few Christmas Tree lots in the City where one can purchase a Vintage Nobel tree. This beauty has open-branched tiers, with gaps between the levels so that ornaments can be appreciated (and you can actually see the tree trunk). The needles look soft.
There are also Noble Fir trees (strong, sturdy branches and layered symmetrical in shape) and Nordmann Fir trees (strong branches with a grand-like shape that will hold its needles into January). Trees range in size from tabletop to 16 ft. tall.
YMCA Executive Director Jim Kirtley told Circling the News that the last shipment was unloaded on December 3 — so customers can be assured the trees are fresh.
This is the largest fundraiser for the local Y and the community is invited to select a tree, knowing their purchase will help the nonprofit provide financial assistance.
Additionally, the Y “elves” will help carry your tree to your car and help you secure it or deliver it.
According to People magazine’s December 5 story “Jennifer Garner Accidentally Bought a Truly Massive Christmas Tree: ‘It’s a Little Aggressive,’” They explain that the “Peppermint” star, shared “a hilarious video to her Instagram on Thursday that even she couldn’t help laughing at.
In the clip, “Go big or go home. #agressive Christmas,” she explained that a Christmas tree had just been delivered to her house and it was a smidge taller than the one she and her family thought they had chosen.”
Shopping with her ex, Ben Affleck, and their three children at the Palisades Malibu YMCA Christmas Tree lot on December 1, Garner had told her children that since they were in a rental house, they could go bigger.
Her Instagram has made entertainment news around the country, leading the Today Show newsletter to state “Jennifer Garner went full Griswold when buying her family’s Christmas tree this year.”
The only piece missing is that the proceeds of her purchase will go to the YMCA, a nonprofit.
If you decide to shop for a tree on Sunday, December 8, visit the traditional Santa Monica College Holiday Glass Sale at the lot from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be one-of-a-kind glass gifts, jewelry and ornaments for sale. Proceeds will help support the Y and the SMC Art Department.
On Sunday, December 15, it’s Holiday Ho!Ho!Ho! at the lot from noon to 4 p.m. visit Santa and Mrs. Claus, eat cookies, have your face painted, purchase baked goods and enjoy entertainment from Fancy Feet dancers and Gerry Blank’s Martial art students.
The tree lot is open Monday to Friday from 3 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
This is one of the few tree lots in the area that carry Vintage Noble fir trees.
