A Free Class Will Be Held on Friday at Woman’s Club

Alison Burmeister will lead a workshop designed to help seniors prevent falls.

A workshop on preventing falls will be hosted by Alison Burmeister from 10 to 11:15 a.m. on Friday, September 20, at the Pacific Palisades Woman’s Club, 901 Haverford Ave. The class is free and there will be refreshments afterwards. RSVP (650) 381-1395 or email alison@alisonburmeister.com or visit: agebold.com.

“Together we can prevent falls,” says Burmeister, whose goal is to help people learn to maintain and restore balance and strength through exercise. “Join me for helpful tips and simple exercises.

“In conjunction with Bold (beta.agebold.com), we have developed a wonderful workshop that I look forward to hosting,” Burmeister says. “You are welcome to bring friends.”

A June 4 JAMA article stated that death rates from falls for U.S. adults age 75 and older nearly tripled from 8,613 in 2000 to 25,189 in 2016.

But falls don’t have to be a death sentence for the elderly. There is an easy way to prevent falls – exercise.

Another June story in JAMA revealed that researchers discovered in a clinical trial from April 2009 to June 2018 that after a fall, those who participated in home-based strength and balance retraining exercise program significantly reduced the rate of subsequent falls.

Adults aged 70 and older who had fallen within the past year were recruited for the trial and were randomly assigned to an exercise program with the usual doctor’s care or to doctor’s care only.

Those in the individualized home-based balance and strength program exercised three times per week and walked 30 minutes at least twice a week.

In the exercise group there were 236 subsequent falls among the 172 participants. Those who did not exercise had 355 falls among 172 patients.

“I’m not saying we live our lives in fear, but if there are steps we can take to keep ourselves safe, let’s do it,” Burmeister said.
