This Sunday with Palisades Symphony

A concert version of highlights of Guiseppe Verdi’s opera “La Traviata” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 25, at the Palisades Lutheran Church, 15905 Sunset. Joel B. Lish is the music director and conductor.

The concert is free and the public is invited.

Presenting the highlights in the original Italian will be soprano Urfa Zakarian as Violetta Valery, a courtesan; tenor Xavier Prado as her lover Alfredo Germon; baritone Eric Castro in the role of Giorgio Germont; soprano Charlotte Bash as Flora, Violetta’s friend; and mezzo Megan Gilespie as Violetta’s maid Annina.

Violetta has been ill, but at a party she is introduced to Alfredo Germont, who has been in love with her for a long time. Alfredo proposes a toast and Violetta responds in praise of free love (Ensemble: “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici”). When Alfredo remains behind after the party, he declares his love (Duet: “Un dì felice”).

Violetta chooses her life with him, but then, his father Giorgio pays her a visit and convinces her to end the affair.

Violetta tells Alfredo that she is no longer in love with him, but in love with Baron Douphol.

As Violetta is on her death bed, the truth comes out that she still loves Alfred, but alas it is too late.
