This editor stopped by the Rancho Park Post Office at 11270 Exposition (at Sepulveda). It was clearly marked where residents are to go to retrieve mail.
The workers were extremely helpful. Residents gave their address and their name. Postal workers, behind a table, crossed checked the name and the address. With that information, a worker went into the mail room and retrieved the mail and gave it to the resident. The whole process did not take more than 10 minutes.
While at the Post Office, the Area Managers Debra Davis and Alma Mosley patiently answered all questions.
Starting today, Tuesday, January 14, a resident can go directly online to USPS.gov to do a change of address. That change will be immediate, and no verification is required. This is being done because of the severe impact to residents with the .
By contrast, if you fill out a change of address at the Post Office rather than going online, it will take seven to 10 days to go in effect.
I went yesterday (Tuesday). Same experience. Lots of staff to help. Didn’t wait long. They only have first class mail available for pick up, not packages yet. You can also go to the USPS site and register for scanned mail daily —that way you log in and see what’s waiting to be delivered and know where there is something important that’s come in to pick up. My experience everywhere is the same, walking in a neighborhood, in the parking lot at the post office, in the lobby, the unfamiliar grocery store, people looking into each others face and saying “how are you doing? Are you ok? Where are you staying? Is your home still there?” Lots of different reactions, but, I think, people just glad for someone to talk to.
