Palisades resident Larry David (and why has he not been asked to be the town’s honorary mayor?), created Curb Your Enthusiasm in 2000.
The final episode will air tonight on HBO. This Episode 10 of Season 12 is titled No Lessons Learned.
One could guess it means Curb‘s Larry David will never change. Maybe he’ll always speak his mind about the little things in life, no matter how socially unacceptable and disruptive his comments may be.
Or has the real Larry David not learned a lesson about the universally-disliked final episode of Seinfeld, which he wrote. In that show’s finale, enemies of the Seinfeld characters testified against them during their court case for breaking a little-known law and they end up behind bars.
So maybe the final episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm will wrap up in a similar way. After all, there’s a long list of enemies who could go after Curb’s Larry David.
The series was developed from a 1999 one-hour special Larry David: Curb Your Enthusiasm.
It starred the same core characters who would go on to star in the series: Palisadian Larry David as a fictionalized version of himself, along with Cheryl Hines as his wife and Jeff Garlin as his best friend and manager.
In 2013, the Writers Guild of American ranked Curb Your Enthusiasm #30 on their list of the 101 Best Written TV Series and three years later Rolling Stone’s Rob Sheffield ranked Curb Your Enthusiasm as the 19th greatest television series ever made.
The series has also received five Golden Globe nominations and won for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy in 2003. Larry David has been nominated for three Golden Globes for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series. Curb has been nominated for four Screen Actor’s Guild Awards, two for Larry David and two for the ensemble cast
During an “exit interview” on Sunday Today with Willie Geist ahead of Sunday night’s series finale, David explained why he’s ending his series.
“I’m too old to be on camera every week now, to act the way I do on the show,” David said. “How can I continue to act like that? It’s insane! I could do it in my 50s and 60s and mid-70s. I’m not going into the 80s acting like that!”
Sounds like retirement. Besides golfing, maybe he could play a new role: Mayor David.
