Coach Steve Kerr will have dinner with a lucky winner.
Steve Kerr, the coach of the Golden State Warriors, and also the USA Olympic basketball team, has agreed to have dinner with the lucky winner of a raffle, sponsored by the Palisades Rotary Club.
Tickets are $100 and only 200 will be sold. Buy all 200 and your chance of dining with Kerr at Modo Mio in Pacific Palisades will be pretty darn good. You can purchase tickets at the Palisades YMCA on Via de la Paz or from your local Rotary member. One hundred percent of the proceeds will be donated toward the YMCA and Palisades High School Rotary student awards.
Where else would you have the chance to dine with a former Pacific Palisades High School basketball player, who went onto play on five NBA championships teams?
After graduating from Palisades High in 1983, Kerr attended the University of Arizona, where he helped lead the Wildcats to the NCAA Final Four his senior year.
Kerr had a 15-year playing career, three years as general manager of the Phoenix Suns and hundreds of games as a television analyst before taking on the job of head coach.
He has been the head coach of the Golden State Warriors since the 2014-15 season and rode as the grand marshal in this town’s Fourth of July parade in 2015.
Currently in his tenth season as head coach, Kerr has guided the Warriors through four NBA championships (2015, 2017, 2018, 2022), six NBA Finals appearances (2015-2019, 2022) and seven postseason appearances (2015-19, 2022-23).
He was named NBA Coach of the Year in 2015-26, and in celebration of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary season (2021-22), Kerr was named as one of the Top 15 coaches in NBA history.
In February, he was offered a contract extension with the Warriors through the 2025-26 season.
Named the 2022-24 USA Basketball Men’s National Team head coach, Kerr coached the US squad at the 2023 FIBA World Cup and will lead the team in the 2024 Summer Olympic Games scheduled for July 26-August 11 in Paris, France.
Kerr grew up on Chautauqua with his parents, Malcolm and Ann, and siblings Susan, John and Andrew.
Kerr learned to play basketball with his father and older brother John on the family’s driveway, and can remember their competitive games of H-O-R-S-E. “My dad had a left-handed hook shot in horse, his go-to shot,” said Kerr, who was a ball boy for John Wooden’s teams at UCLA (where his father was a professor of political science) and then played in Herb Furth’s junior high league at PaliHi on Sundays.
This led to Kerr’s first coaching experience. “In Herb’s league, the idea is that you would play in 7th, 8th and 9th grade, and then in 10th grade you were required to coach the younger guys,” Kerr said. “This was a real good training ground for a lot of people.”
Kerr and his wife Margo have three children, Maddy, Nick and Matthew.
