Program to Feature Inceville’s Early History

Archivist Marc Wanamaker and Pacific Palisades Historical Society President Eric Dugdale will present “Inceville’s Native American Community and Its Hollywood Legacy” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 26 at Pierson Playhouse, 941 Temescal Canyon Rd. The event is free, all are welcome and refreshments will follow the program.

A decade before the founding of Pacific Palisades in 1922, the tiny film colony of Inceville was established near the ocean, in Santa Ynez Canyon (north of today’s PCH and Sunset intersection). Living and working next to filmmaker Thomas Ince was a group of Native Americans, who headlined the Miller Brothers’ 101 Wild West Show at the Venice pier. The Native Americans helped pioneer modern cinema, appearing in Ince’s Wild West silent movies, and Ince responded in kind, building a school for their children. He also encouraged them as actors and directors.

The program will feature some rarely seen images from Wanamaker’s legendary Bison Archives.
