Local clothing designer, former Village Book store employee and Palisadian Andrea Dyke continues to serve a niche to provide people with comfortable, but unobtainable clothing styles.
Dyke started offering the simple, body skimming, knee-length A-line dresses from the 1960s that were universally flattering.
This editor purchased a flannel nightgown (nightshirt) and it was roomy, comfy and like sleeping in a blanket. It was perfect for the winter months, especially if one likes a cold bedroom.
Now Dyke’s offering another item that men used to love to wear. The shirt/short “suits” went out of style and now can’t be found.
Dyke said, “In the early 1960’s, my dad and brothers wore Cabana Suits…a matching short and shirt set in fun lightweight cotton prints lined in terry cloth.
“My dad wore his constantly while puttering in his workshop, chopping wood, and relaxing at our cottage at Victoria Beach, and my brothers would slip into theirs after long days of swimming, playing in the sand, and generally getting into mischief. I thought they looked chic, fabulous, and cozy.”
With the help of Dyke’s millennial sons, Lance and Sudsy, she has crafted an update on Cabana Suits, calling them the Après Surf Suit in honor of California.
Her two sons and husband Rhos have been “road testing” them for the past couple of years, and the casual, but stylish wear has instantly become a favorite with the guys.
There are three fabrics available: tree section, sand dunes and the Strand. They are made individually, and if ordered by May 4, they will be delivered before Memorial Day.
