Pacific Palisades resident Matty Gottesman, released his first single “Don’t Play Dumb” on January 19. The singer-songwriter’s single has already racked up more than 10,000 views on Spotify alone.

The song features lyrics and vocals by Gottesman, and instrumentals done by some of the industry’s greatest session players: Amos Heller on bass (Taylor Swift, Thomas Rhett, Florida Georgia Line), Matt Billingslea on drums (Taylor Swift, Lady A), Brent Paschke on guitar (Pharrell Williams, The Neptunes, Post Malone, Katy Perry, Beck), and Jesse McGinty on horns (Lizzo, Shawn Mendes, Pharrell Williams), as well as mixes by Sawyr (Taylor Swift, ZAYN, Nicki Minaj, Ryan Tedder).

Matty is a 19-year-old recording artist, who grew up here in Pacific Palisades. He began writing songs at the young age of 6, while participating in local sports such as the Pacific Palisades Baseball Association.

He generally writes music by himself at his piano.

When it comes to singing, “The lyrics usually come with the melody for me,” Matty said. “I’ll hear that initial melody and some words/phrases will just appear right with it.”

The Palisades Charter High School 2022 graduate describes his music as “a mix of modern and classic pop,” which is reflected in his music’s choice of basslines, drum, and horns.

Matty did most of the music’s marketing himself, posting it on his various social media accounts and convincing friends to do the same.

When Matty isn’t writing or producing music, he enjoys playing baseball and was a starting pitcher for the PaliHi Dolphins. He is especially enthusiastic about his beloved hometown Dodgers.

Currently a freshman at UCLA, he is studying music production. “Last quarter, I took the History of Rock n Roll which was very interesting, and this quarter I am taking classes on both music documentaries and The Beatles,” Matty said.

Matty’s next single, “Lightning Strikes Twice,” will be available on most streaming platforms Thursday, February 23. If you want to be notified of its release, follow Matty on Spotify under Matty Gottesman.
