A waterworks project is underway between Potrero and Temescal Canyon along Pacific Coast Highway. It is set to be completed in January 2023.
The Los Angeles County Waterworks is continuing construction on the Malibu Branch Feeder Realignment Project, which includes installation of a new 30-inch water main for District 29 customers.
The project started in March, with pipe being laid between Potrero Canyon and Temescal Canyon, along Pacific Coast Highway. Nightly, Monday, through Sunday, at least one lane and the shoulder on northbound Pacific Coast Highway have been closed.
The pipe will be “flushed” tonight, August 1, between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. It will be the first of three flushing events, the timing of the other two has not yet been scheduled. The flushing is being done to maintain water quality during construction.
L.A. Country spokesperson Kerjon Lee said in an August 1 email that “The District intends to capture as much water as possible during each flushing event for beneficial reuse on other projects. The remaining water will discharge into the City of LA’s Potrero Canyon Storm Drain, where the Pacific Palisades Low Flow Diversion will divert most of the water into the City’s sewer collection system.”
The water pipe replacement was deemed necessary in order to ensure reliability for Malibu residents and business owners. Water service to customers has not been disrupted.
“Your patience is appreciated with any traffic-related delays that may be experienced during construction,” Lee said.
