Some of the pipes along Pacific Coast Highway near George Wolfberg Park at Potrero Canyon belong to L.A. County and will be used for a L.A. County Waterworks District 29 project.
The Malibu Branch Feeder Realignment project, which was put out to bid in 2018, will finally begin construction on March 21.
Work will occur on the northbound lane and shoulder of Pacific Coast Highway between Chautauqua Boulevard and Temescal Canyon Road. Closures can be expected Monday through Saturday from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., with construction anticipated to end in June.
About 1,500 linear feet of a new 30-inch diameter water main will be installed in the Caltrans right of way, replacing an older pipe.
Two 2017 public meetings were held, one in Malibu and one in Topanga, in conjunction with the project. A draft environmental impact review was circulated in 2020. A final environmental impact report was prepared and submitted by L.A. County in April 2021 and includes the comments received during the draft EIR, and the responses.
The initial $1,164,502 contract will realign portions of the water distribution main on PCH that goes to Malibu.
L.A. County Waterworks District 29, established in 1959, supplies water to about 20,000 people in the city of Malibu and the unincorporated area of Topanga.
Major water system infrastructure facilities in District 29 include about 249 miles of water main and 47 tanks with a total storage capacity of 20 million gallons.
Historically, water system facilities were acquired from various small mutual water companies, and the infrastructure is aging. Some of the acquired facilities were originally constructed in the 1940s and 1950s. District 29 is supplied by a 30- inch-diameter transmission pipeline that was built during the 1960s.
