Our town’s year-long Centennial celebration began on January 14 when the Historical Society board members joined with members of the newly created Palisades Forestry Committee (a Community Council entity) to plant a ceremonial Coastal Live Oak on Founders Oak Island, on Haverford Avenue, near where the town originated.
Springing ahead to Saturday, May 7, the Historical Society will host the official Centennial Celebration at the YMCA’s Simon Meadow in Temescal Canyon at 1 p.m. This free gathering is open to the public, but please reserve a seat under the big white tent by visiting the HS website (pacificpalisadeshistory.org).
“From the Mountains to the Sea” will honor the spirit of Chautauqua with a Chumash/Tongva blessing, a Methodist prayer, community and distinguished guest speakers, and participation by the American Legion, Theatre Palisades Youth and the Centennial Art Contest winners. Plus, silent movies in town and open houses at the Buerge Chapel, Aldersgate/Seven Arrows and the Woman’s Club.

Centennial Issue Seeks Support from Businesses, Residents and Organizations
The Historical Society, in collaboration with a small group of local journalists, is preparing a special Centennial publication that will be mailed free to every household in Pacific Palisades in mid-April. This vintage issue will recount the town’s history in feature articles plus classic photographs from the Historical Society’s collection.
To support this publication, the Historical Society is seeking businesses and organizations who choose to either sponsor a page in the magazine ($1,000) or pay $200 for a chronological box (2″ tall and 3″ wide) that includes the year their business or organization was founded and up to 60 words of text. Page sponsors will receive a free chronological ad.
Residents are invited to buy a chronological box ($150) that states the year a family or individual moved to Pacific Palisades, past/current family members, and a particular accomplishment or role within the community, with a 60-word limit. These boxes are also 2-by-3 inches and will run chronologically, starting with Ernie Marquez, who was born in Santa Monica Canyon in 1924.
