The automated people mover guideway is being constructed over the P2B parking garage at the center of LAX.
Pacific Palisades residents should be alerted to the closure of upper and lower levels at LAX Terminal 1 between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. for the construction of a pedestrian bridge over the roadway.
Closures started on February 27 and will be in effect until March 4 and again from March 6-9 for the bridge, which will connect the future Center Central Terminal Area Automated People Mover station to the extension of Terminal 1.
Upper/departure level closures will take place between midnight and 4 a.m. Traffic to Terminals 7 and 8 will follow the southbound East Way detour.
In order to access the Tom Bradley International Terminal and Terminals 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, motorists will use the established detour that begins at East Way.
The centerpiece of LAX’s modernization program is the $2-billion automated people mover (APM).
The APM is a 2.25-mile electric train system that will transport travelers into and out of the Central Terminal Area (CTA), connecting them to new off-site parking facilities, regional light-rail transportation and the Consolidated Rent-A-Car. It is expected to be completed in 2023.
The people mover will connect to three stations inside the terminal area: the West Station (with access to Terminal 3, 4, 5 and Tom Bradley International), the Center Station (access to Terminal 1, 2, 3 , 5 and 6) and the East Station (access to terminals 7 and 8).
The people mover will also connect the main airport with LAX’s new economy parking, regional light-rail transportation, and the car-rental facility. The APM is expected to relieve congestion within the airport in time for the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.
According to the Los Angeles World Airports, “During peak hours (9 a.m. to 11 p.m.), the APM will run nine trains, each with four cars and will be capable of carrying up to 50 passengers and their luggage, with a total of 200 passengers per train.
“Trains will be available at each station every two minutes during peak hours with a total of 10 minutes travel time end-to-end (from the Consolidated Rent-A-Car Facility to the West CTA Station). For easy access, the APM trains will have large, wide doors with level boarding. The APM will be FREE for all users and operate 24/7. With an anticipated use of approximately 30 million passengers per year, it is estimated that the APM will result in 117,000 fewer vehicle miles traveled per day.”
