Foumiko Kometani’s “Untitled” piece is featured in the Malibu Arts Commission fall art exhibit.
Pacific Palisades artist and author Foumiko Kometani Greenfeld has two oil paintings on display in the City of Malibu Arts Commission’s fall art exhibition, “An Eye to the Future,” in the City Hall art gallery.
Local artists were invited to submit original oil, acrylic or watercolor paintings for the exhibition, which is on display through November 24. The theme of the exhibition is the artists’ vision of what the future holds. The exhibition can be viewed Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 23825 Stuart Ranch Rd. Born in Osaka, Japan in 1930, Foumiko Kometani started painting in her teens, and enjoyed early success. Her works were selected for the important Nika Group Exhibitions for three straight years beginning in 1956, and she was awarded a fellowship to the MacDowell Artist Colony in New Hampshire in 1960. There she met her future husband, writer Josh Greenfeld, and in the early 1970s they moved with their two sons to Pacific Palisades.
In addition to her painting, Foumiko creates colorful collages by covering empty cardboard boxes with newspaper and magazine clippings. Over the years, she has written some 20 magazine articles and short stories, plus a novel, “Passover,” which won the Akutagawa Prize (1986). In 1999 she received the Japanese Women’s Writing Prize for “Family Business.”
