The Santa Monica Conservancy is hosting its fall event “Wall to Wall” from 5 to 6:15 p.m. on Sunday, November 14, through a virtual or self-guided tour.
The Conservancy invites you to explore the City’s street murals and the stories they tell. Admission is $20 for Conservancy members and $30 for the general public.
Start with the webinar hosted by Santa Monica College art history professor Elizabeth Dastin as she discusses the craft and messaging of street murals, key artworks in Santa Monica and the inherent preservation challenges faced by the medium. Artists have created colorful murals from Ocean Avenue to the Santa Monica Airport.
Meet three artists, including Marcel “SEL” Blanco, whose vibrant murals evoke emotion and thought through the use of color, narrative imagery and movement.
Santa Monica is home to more than 130 murals – some stand boldly on the boulevards while others are hidden in alleyways, obscured by development or faded by time. Each has a story to tell or an issue to air, adding vital strands of inclusion to the fabric of the city. Discover the social, historic and aesthetic significance of Santa Monica’s outdoor murals
Registrants will receive a print and digital booklet of 36 select murals throughout the 8-square-mile city for the self-guided tour.
The tour can be designed to a preferred length and can be enjoyed by walking, biking or driving. Register today to celebrate the artistry and stories of Santa Monica’s murals.
Organizers invite participants to dive deep into the craft and messaging of street murals, key artworks in Santa Monica and the inherent preservation challenges faced by the medium.
