Nick Melvoin
LAUSD Board Member Nick Melvoin and his District Director Allison Polhill will speak at the Pacific Palisades Community Council meeting this Thursday on Zoom.
The meeting starts at 6 p.m., and Melvoin is scheduled near the beginning.
The packed agenda includes a City Council redistricting update and the status of a letter to Governor Gavin Newsom, urging him to reconsider SB 9 and SB 10, which are high-density housing bills passed by the State Assembly and the State Senate.
These bills do not take into consideration communities such as Pacific Palisades that are in a high fire severity zone and the PPCC has asked Newsom to veto them. Senator Ben Allen, Assemblymember Richard Bloom and Councilmember Mike Bonin oppose the bills.
Also on the agenda is an update regarding dockless electric scooters. Residents who have had problems with the improper parking of the scooters can go to MYLA311 to report.

Public school parents might be interested in an April Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences report that evaluated the problem of learning loss after studying the impact of coronavirus lockdowns on students in the Netherlands and how that might apply to Los Angeles residents.
The Netherlands study described that country’s lockdown as a best – case scenario – it was short, there was equitable school funding and high rates of broadband access. The result on kids was summed up: “Despite favorable conditions, we find that students made little or no progress while learning from home. Learning loss was most pronounced among students from disadvantaged homes.”
Cecily Myart-Cruz, president of United Teachers Los Angeles, told Los Angeles magazine, “There’s no such thing as learning loss. Our kids didn’t lose anything. It’s OK that our babies may not have learned all their times tables. They learned resilience. They learned survival. They learned critical thinking skills. They know the difference between a riot and protest. They know the words insurrection and coup.”
What can Melvoin do to assure local parents that their kids will continue to receive in-classroom education this fall?
