Members of the “Aladdin, Jr.” cast are ready to entertain.
The always popular Theatre Palisades Youth will present their summer production of “Aladdin, Jr.” over the next two weekends – but with a twist. Instead of performing in Pierson Playhouse, the shows will be outside in Temescal Gateway Park, 15601 W. Sunset Boulevard. Tickets may be purchased online at www.theatrepalisdes.org/youth.
Producer Andy Ramos told Circling the News, “TPY is doing ‘Aladdin, Jr.’ because this is the show Molly Steinsapir had requested to do last summer during pandemic times. But sadly, that was impossible because of the pandemic.”
“Last summer, we had planned to do ‘Aladdin’ before the pandemic shut us down,” director Lara Gantz continued. “Molly had a script of ‘Aladdin’ and shared it with me in order to try to persuade me to choose it for the summer 2020 show.”
Molly died in February in a tragic bicycle accident near her home in Marquez Knolls. Ramos wrote, “After her passing, we made a plan to do the play in honor of Molly and dedicate the show to her.”
Ramos said that the July 24 production will be a Molly Steinsapir Benefit Performance and that her brother, who is in this production, will be playing Iago.
Disney’s “Aladdin, Jr.” is based on the 1992 Academy-Award winning film and the 2014 hit Broadway show. Aladdin and his three friends, Babkak, Omar and Kassim, are down on their luck until Aladdin discovers a magic lamp and a Genie, who grants three wishes.
Twenty-five kids have been divided into two casts and all have time on stage. Additionally, 15 local teens, alumni of the program, are also helping with this production.
“It’s a true community effort that is blooming beautifully,” Ramos wrote, noting that the cast, interns, parents and crew exemplify the passion, work and creativity that is needed for a show like this. He promised that people be entertained by a show that is “full of fun and humor.”
And most likely the audience will come away humming “A Whole New World.”
Ganz, who directed her first TPY production in 2016, praises the parents, who volunteer their time, and work either with costumes, props, painting or building sets, cleaning and organizing as well as reaching out to publicize the event.
She, choreographer Emma Green and musical directors Nathan Heldman and Harriet Fraser say the third through eighth graders have turned this into a truly exceptional show.
