Where New York City could get new casinos

Three casino licenses in New York is a tidbit that many market players are willing to compete for. In doing so, they may go all-in. Experts already have guesses about who will get these licenses. So, two licenses will likely go to existing casinos at nearby racetracks.

But there will be another golden ticket – and it means a casino could pop up in any one of five neighborhoods. There are already proposals for Midtown Manhattan, but that’s not the limit, of course. The state Gaming Commission has said licenses won’t be issued until the end of 2025 at the earliest. And there are already ten proposals, which are being considered most carefully.

Why investors are so optimistic

The team proposes to build a resort and casino on the west side of the railroad station, which is still undeveloped. There are many things proposed for this location – not only a luxury casino-resort, but also the creation of a school, below-market-rate housing and public spaces. However, the project did not get much support from the community board.

Times Square

If the project gets approval, players will be able to try their luck at a sleek new casino, hotel and restaurant complex inside the Times Square skyscraper.  Although the casino complex will have restaurants and 950 hotel rooms, developers have said they will only be able to accommodate 10 percent of the expected visitors. That will allow other hotels in the area to count on new guests. However, the project has begun to be criticized by Broadway theaters that are located on and near the plaza.

Saks Fifth Avenue

Saks Fifth Avenue proposes to convert the top three floors of its Manhattan flagship store into a casino.  This could allow the work to be completed in less than a year. However, the Manhattan Community Affairs Council opposes the proposal.

Hotel Pennsylvania

The project involves opening a casino in the former Hotel Pennsylvania across from Penn Station. But the developer has not yet decided whether it will apply for a license.

Midtown East

This project involves building an underground casino and hotel, residential buildings (including more than 500 promised affordable apartments) and extensive green space. But the public has opposed the construction of a casino on this site in Midtown East because the site was originally designated for affordable housing.
