The Malibu Orchid Society, based in Pacific Palisades will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, May 16, at the Hart Lounge in the Community Methodist church, 801 Via de la Paz.
The topic, “Growing Orchids in Cool Coastal Southern California,” might be of interest to all Pacific Palisades residents.
The speaker, Marc Better, a MOS Member and orchid hobbyist, has
been growing orchids for more than 30 years.
Over the years, Better has had greenhouses in three separate locations, but now
he prefers to navigate the challenges of local weather with an outdoor collection. He will offer attendees tips on how to select orchids that suit the local environment and how to ensure that with proper care one has orchid flowers throughout the year.
Better moved his orchid collection and constructed a lathe house in his coastal yard in 2018 where he takes advantage of our temperate climate to grow plants near the beach.
His presentation will address how the local environment influences the variety of orchids that can prosper.
Better has a doctorate in biochemistry and is a biotechnology professional with more than 30 years of experience in cell therapy and biologics. He is past president of the South Bay Orchids and has served on the Southland Orchid Show Committee.
Visitors are invited to the meeting of MOS, a nonprofit that was formed in the spring of 1963. Each month members display orchids for ribbon judging and share tips on how the plants are grown. Visit:click here.
