Starting at 7 p.m. this Friday and continuing all day Saturday, a two-day card-trading and family-fun event will be held with proceeds going to the Santa Monica Police Survivor’s Fund and to Team Prime Time (a nonprofit that sponsors sports teams for special needs students in Westside public high schools).
Palisades resident Steve Heineman, a former Santa Monica policeman, is organizing the event in Santa Monica with his two sons, Scott and Tyler, who are major league baseball players, as a way of giving back.
But Mr. Heineman doesn’t play fair! He sent the following information about Po Po Smoke BBQ that will be available starting at noon on Saturday:
“Grill Master” Paul P along with his very own “Dream Team” will be barbecuing the following:
12 Briskets
16 plates of Beef Ribs
20 Tri Tip
5 Pork Bellies
100 Sausages
And Paul P writes: “We will be cooking low ‘n’ slow over-night, for 13 hours, using only solid post oak logs in an offset reverse flow Meadow Creek 500 smoker.
“The briskets and beef ribs will be rubbed down with just enough salt and pepper to enhance the great flavors of these delicious fat-bearing cuts. They will absorb the perfect amount of smoke and be cooked until the meat is pull-apart tender.
“Three of the 12 briskets are ‘extra’ special. Through my buddy Logan Cahoon of Meat Head BBQ LA, he has reserved three Australian Wagyu Brisket Master Kobe 9+’s.
“These briskets came from purebred Wagyu cattle that have spent over 500 days eating a specialized grain rotation, giving it a minimum marbling score of 9.”
Paul continues: “The Californian Tri Tip will be smoked until rare. Immediately after, each piece will be reversed seared over 500° of glowing coals. Once the flavors are locked in, they will be sliced into small steaks. Given the shape of the Tri Tip, there is a cut for everyone’s delight.
“Beware of the humble sausages, They will be cooked to perfection. Taking a bite into the sausages may cause the juices to gush out. Expect to use plenty of napkins.”
Saturday will also include dunk tanks (dunk-a-cop) from noon to 6 p.m.; kids card collecting classes from 1 to 1:30 and again from 2:30 to 3 p.m.
A Krispy Kreme doughnut eating contest will be held at 1 p.m. and a Dodger Dog eating contest at 5:30 p.m. A magic show will start at 3 p.m.
The Heineman brothers, Scott (Texas Rangers) and Tyler (Miami Marlins), will sign autographs at 4 p.m.
There will also be a raffle and silent auction available.
Hours are 7 p.m. to midnight on Friday and noon to midnight on Saturday and Saturday at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, 1855 Main St. Admission is free.
