Capturing 12 CIF LA City Section Titles

Palisades Charter High School has again won the  CIF LA City Section Commissioner’s Cup. The Dolphins won 12 City Championships during the 2018-2019 school year to capture their fifth consecutive Cup.

PaliHi received 407.25 points, followed by Granada Hills with 390 points and Birmingham with 362 points.

Team titles captured by PaliHi this school year include: boys and girls tennis; boys and girls swim; boys and girls lacrosse; boys and girls volleyball; boys and girls water polo; boys track and girls cross country.

The program was started five years ago for City Section schools to recognize their athletic accomplishments and to honor the coaches and student-athletes who put time and effort into the pursuit of excellence.

LA City Section sports information director Dick Dornan explained how the point system works. “Any team that makes the playoffs earns points. Each time they advance to the next round, they receive more points.Ultimately, a section championship is worth the most.”

The fall, winter and spring team performances are added together to determine the eventual winner.

The CIF Southern Section Commissioner’s Cup, which ranks the top sports program in that section, celebrated its 28th year as Harvard-Westlake boys took first place with 20 points and Mater Dei was second. On the girls’ side, Santa Margarita won with 19 points and Eleanor Roosevelt was second with 14 points.

Since the Cup was first awarded at the end of the 1991-92 school year, Loyola has captured the title nine times, including in 2018. Santa Margarita leads the girls’ side with seven Commissioner Cups.
