Some dog foods have been recalled because of high vitamin D, which is toxic to dogs.

FDA Recalls Certain Dog Foods

The Food and Drug Administration issued a December 3 recall on several dry dog foods after receiving complaints that the food had toxic amounts of vitamin D. Scientists evaluated samples of the affected products and found that some food contained as much as 70 times the intended amount of vitamin D.

According to the FDA website, “Testing found that samples of the dog food contained excessive, potentially toxic amounts of vitamin D. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, but very high amounts can cause serious health problems like kidney failure or death.”

Symptoms in pets may include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling and weight loss. At toxic levels, vitamin D can cause kidney failure and death. The FDA warned that “Pet owners whose dogs have been eating the recalled brands and are showing these symptoms should contact their veterinarians.”

Pet owners can report suspect cases to the FDA, and veterinarians who suspect vitamin D toxicity should report cases through the Safety Reporting Portal.

Consumers are warned that this is a developing situation and further recalls may be announced.
