This was the goldfish pool on Marge and Bob Gold’s home after the fire. Family members came to rescue the fish from the ashes and sludge.

We were finally able to visit our property on Las Casas on Sunday, February 2.  With permit access in hand, we passed the check point at Sunset and Amalfi.  There were five of us.  Besides Bob and me, we were accompanied by my daughter, my granddaughter and my granddaughter’s husband.

We came with a purpose… and that was to rescue our goldfish.  We had already been told by two different people who had come by our property after the January 7 Palisades Fire that the fish were alive.

When we arrived at our house and went to the backyard, we found a good Samaritan had rigged up a solar powered aerator to our pond.

To this person, thank you!

We immediately went to work and after a short time all seven fish were captured.

The fish were rescued from the pond.

They are now living happily with my granddaughter and her husband in Glassell Park where they have created an outdoor fishpond.

And of course, they said we can visit the fish any time we want!!

Great story. Great neighbor or Good Samaritan who installed the aerator. Such a Palisades community thing to do!

This is wonderful news that made my day. I am so happy for your fish and hope they live a long, happy, and fire-free life in Glassell Park. I too would like to thank whoever rigged up the aerator. Bonus points for green energy.

Marge and Bob— so good you are safe and sound—the name gold is good and lucky for your fish!!!!! Thanks to your good neighbor–may the heavens bless him/her with good fortune

I want to make another point while I am still basking in the warm thoughts around the near Mission-Impossible-level goldfish rescue: A team of five. Bunny suits. Police checkpoints. High-tech aeration equipment. Booyah, Mr. Phelps. But I digress.

The other point I came back to make is that Goldfish are an ideal memento of the home that was. As mementos go, goldfish have been scientifically proven to be 4x better than a brick.

    Science:
    Cute — Goldfish
    Fun to watch — Goldfish
    Lasts forever — Brick
Let’s you know its time is up by floating calmly on its back — Goldfish
Can be given a bathroom “Burial at sea” when the time comes — Goldfish

The data does not lie. Goldfish as mementos are better than bricks in 4 out of 5 categories.

And if someone also took a brick, they still got the second best memento.

  5. Marge Gold says:

By the way, we also each took a brick!
