MATTHEW’S CONCERT WAS CANCELLED:
One reader sent an email on December 6 at 7:58 p.m. “I’m writing this as I stand outside St. Matthew’s in the dark with many others who were expecting to attend tonight’s Music Guild Concert.”
The concert, featuring The Chamber Orchestra at St. Matthew’s and Choir of St. Matthew’s Parish, conducted by Dwayne S. Milburn, kicks off with Baroque masterpieces by Henry Purcell and Archangelo Corelli. The Chamber Orchestra will be joined by choir and soloists in Vivaldi’s effervescent Gloria in D Major. A traditional sing-along of Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus will round out the program.
According to an outage alert from DWP, the power went out around 5:30 p.m. Lights were out along the north portion of Bienveneda, and the traffic signal was out at Bienveneda and Sunset.
The director, Milburn told those assembled that he had received word the power would come back on around 11:30 p.m., which meant the concert was cancelled.
One music lover asked Milburn if this concert program could happen on another date, but was told “No, because so many of the musicians are booked for the rest of the holiday season.”
CONCERT AND LECTURE SCHEDULED FOR DECEMBER 14
Another reader wrote, “In case you’re interested in another holiday concert, there will be one “A Very Kosher Chrismukkah,” on December 14. What is unique about this concert is that it will include Hanukkah songs as well as Christmas songs, written by Jewish composers. The Temple writes, “Ever wonder why there isn’t a lot of great Chanukah music? Because all the Jewish composers were writing Christmas classics. There is a pre-concert lecture with Professor Jonahtan L. Friemann at 6:30 p.m. and the concert starts at 7:30 p.m.
Performers include the temple’s Volunteer Choir, which includes Pacific Palisades residents, a children’s choir, a professional vocal octet including a Palisadian, seven Cantors including Chaim Frenkel from Kehillat Israel and recent Palisadian Kerith Spencer-Shapiro from Wilshire Blvd. Temple, and the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony.
The concert is being presented by Wilshire Boulevard Temple at its Resnick Campus, 11960 Sunset Blvd. in Brentwood. Tickets are $45, which covers the lecture and the concert. Light refreshments will be served afterwards after the concert. For tickets, click here.
