“Friday Night Lights” Clinic at PaliHi
Football coach and YMCA instructor Todd Tharen will hold his sixth annual “Friday Night Lights” from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 3, at the Palisades High football field.
Kids ages 6 to 13 will get to run through the tunnel—and through smoke–onto the field. They then will have a chance to play football under the lights.
Kids can bring a team or be placed on one. There will be drills, scrimmages and the fastest-man contest for all grades, plus other competitions and prizes/giveaways.
Todd says he loves conducting this particular evening camp because it allows kids the chance to run on the field and experience how it feels to play under the lights. He is dedicated to creating a fun, positive experience in a safe environment.
Helping him is Coach Rashad Rhodes, the former sports director at the Palisades-Malibu YMCA, who played football at Hamilton High and Santa Monica College, and Coach Darnell Rubin, who played for Westchester High before enrolling at Chapman University where he was a standout wide receiver and return specialist.
Todd graduated from Fairfax High, where he received All-City a honors as a junior and senior defensive back. He received a scholarship to Marshall University in West Virginia, where he became a standout wide receiver and led the NCAA in average punt return yards. For the past five years, he was the head football coach at Calvary Christian School for eighth grade.
The cost is $60 per child, and water and Gatorade will be provided.
Signups are also available for Todd’s 2019 summer football camp, July 22 to 26, at the Calvary School athletic field. Sign up before May 24 and save $25 per session. A week session is $375. Visit: TeamToddSports.com or call (323) 574-0317 or email ttodd337@hotmail.com.
Just to correct the record: Todd’s name is actually Tharen Todd, though many call him Todd as if it were his first name. He’s also Coach Todd.
I know him by having been an exercise class student of his at the Y for the past decade. I know some of the mothers whose children regularly attend his Football Camps. Nothing but raves and enthusiasm from parents and football campers alike!
Todd is that rare person who has not only the expertise, but also the charisma, humor, and goodwill to motivate and challenge every student, whether child or adult.
