Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are back at that New York deli as Harry and Sally.
Just like in When Harry Met Sally, they’re eating sandwiches.
And just like in that 1989 movie, all eyes turn to their table.
Ryan and Crystal, the former honorary co-mayor of Pacific Palisades, return to their now-iconic roles in a special commercial for mayonnaise. (It’s Best Foods mostly west of the Rocky Mountains and Hellmann’s mostly east of the Rockies.)
In the commercial, Ryan as Sally is unimpressed with her sandwich. But once she adds mayonnaise, she loses control — if you know what I mean. Crystal as Harry then says “here we go!”
And just like in the film, another patron points to Ryan and Crystal’s table and tells her server, “I’ll have what she’s having.”
The difference here is that instead of that request coming from an impressed older woman – played by the mother of director Rob Reiner – this time it’s a much younger person, 27-year-old actress Sydney Sweeney. It’s an apparent attempt by the commercial’s creators to introduce a newer generation to When Harry Met Sally and its stars, and to make this brand of mayo memorable to all generations.
This commercial is expected to run during a break in the second quarter of Sunday’s Super Bowl game. The game and commercials can be seen here in Los Angeles on KTTV, Channel 11.
A 30-second version of this commercial and a longer version both are available now on YouTube and other platforms.
